Agentic marketing: when AI agents run the campaigns

Most AI in marketing tools writes a subject line and hands it back to you. Agentic marketing goes further: an AI agent takes the actions itself, building the audience, writing the messages, wiring the trigger and turning the campaign on, while you set the goal and check the result.

What agentic marketing is

An AI agent is a model that can call tools: it reads the request, decides which actions to take, takes them, and checks the result. Agentic marketing points that agent at marketing work. Instead of clicking through an email tool, you tell the agent what you want, and it operates the tool for you.

The connection between the agent and the tool is usually the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard that lets agents such as Claude, ChatGPT, Codex and Cursor call another product's functions.

Agentic versus AI-assisted marketing automation

  • AI-assisted: the tool suggests copy or a segment inside its own editor. You still build the campaign, step by step.
  • Agentic: the agent builds the campaign. It creates the audience, writes and previews the messages, sets the timing, and can turn it on. You review its work rather than doing it.

Many platforms now offer both: an editor for people, and an MCP server for agents. A few, like Sequence, are built for agents first and have no builder at all. The MCP server comparison shows what each vendor lets an agent do.

What agentic marketing needs to be safe

  • Tools for every step. If the agent can write an email but not schedule it, a person ends up finishing the job by hand.
  • Rules the agent cannot skip. Unsubscribe links, SMS consent and quiet hours should be enforced by the platform, not left to the prompt.
  • A way to look before it sends. Previews, test sends and dry runs let you check the work.
  • Brakes. A pause when complaints or bounces spike, and confirmation before anything is deleted.

An email and SMS example

Ask an agent connected to Sequence:

“When someone fills in our quote form, text them that we got it, email our price guide an hour later, and stop if they reply.”

The agent then calls Sequence's tools in order:

  • upsert_template twice, for the text and the email, and preview_template to show you both.
  • create_sequence on the lead.created event your website form sends, with conversation.replied as an exit.
  • add_step twice: the text right away, the email an hour later.
  • send_test_email to your inbox, then set_sequence_status when you approve.

Sequence exposes 102 tools in total, listed in the docs. Sequence adds the unsubscribe footer, checks SMS consent and holds texts for quiet hours on every sequence send, whatever the agent asked for.

Risks and how to control them

  • Wrong claims in copy. Agents write confidently. Ask for a preview and read it before anything goes live.
  • Sending too soon. Tell the agent to leave new sequences as drafts until you approve them.
  • Reaching the wrong people. Ask the agent to preview the audience size and a sample before sending.
  • Consent. Choose a platform that enforces opt-outs and SMS consent itself, so a prompt cannot override them.

To try it, connect Claude or Codex to the Sequence MCP server.
